Electric Mobility, Practically Supported
Karvelin was established in Tawau to offer EV rental with the kind of practical support that makes a difference — charging maps, route notes, and a team you can reach when it counts.
Back to HomeStarting Where EV Support Was Thin
Karvelin came together in 2022 when a group of Tawau-based driving enthusiasts noticed a consistent gap: electric vehicles were arriving in Sabah, but reliable short-term rental options — with proper route support — weren't keeping pace. Most rental operators lacked the infrastructure knowledge to help drivers navigate charging logistics confidently.
We decided to fill that gap ourselves. Our first arrangement was a modest day rental with a handwritten charging station list. Since then, we've refined the process into three well-defined rental plans, each backed by updated charging route documentation and direct telephone support.
Operating from Jalan Dunlop in Tawau, we serve individuals, business travellers, and visitors curious about exploring Sabah's East Coast by electric vehicle. Our focus is on making each rental feel manageable — not experimental.
Our Mission
To make electric vehicle travel accessible and well-supported in East Malaysia — one rental at a time. We believe the shift toward EV mobility works best when drivers feel informed and prepared rather than anxious about range or charging.

People Behind the Arrangement
A small, locally-based team that handles everything from vehicle preparation to route support.
Hafiz Sulaiman
Founder & Fleet Manager
Hafiz coordinates vehicle readiness and manages the handover process. He built Karvelin's initial charging route documentation and continues to update it as new stations come online across Sabah.
Nadia Rashid
Customer Liaison
Nadia handles all pre-rental communications, booking arrangements, and mid-trip telephone support. She is the first point of contact for enquiries and works to match each customer with the right plan.
James Tiong
Route Planning Specialist
James prepares the charging route plans and inter-state itineraries included with multi-day rentals. He tests new routes periodically and notes where charger availability is reliable versus variable.
How We Prepare Each Rental
Our operating protocols reflect a straightforward principle: if we wouldn't drive it ourselves without checking, we don't hand it over.
Full Charge at Handover
Every vehicle is handed over at or near full charge. We record the battery state at both departure and return using the vehicle's on-board display.
Readiness Checklist
A vehicle-readiness checklist is completed with the customer before departure — covering tyres, mirrors, charging cable, interior condition, and any existing marks.
Updated Route Documentation
Charging maps and route plans are reviewed monthly. We cross-reference reported downtime and add newly operational stations as they become available in East Malaysia.
Insurance Verified
All vehicles carry current Malaysian third-party motor insurance. Policy documents are available for inspection at the point of handover, and we explain coverage scope clearly.
Data Privacy Practices
Customer data collected during the booking process is used only for the rental arrangement and kept in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
Direct Support Line
Our team's telephone number is provided at handover for direct access during your rental. Calls are answered during operating hours and we aim to respond within the same day.
Electric Vehicle Rental in Sabah — A Practical Perspective
East Malaysia's road network and the growing availability of charging infrastructure make EV travel a realistic option for regional exploration. Tawau sits at a natural departure point for routes heading north along the coast toward Semporna, Lahad Datu, and Sandakan. For travellers willing to plan their charging stops, these routes are manageable in an electric vehicle with the right preparation.
Karvelin's rental arrangements are structured around that reality. Rather than offering a bare vehicle and wishing the driver well, we include a charging point map with every rental, adjusted for the plan type. Day rental customers receive a local map covering Tawau and nearby areas. Multi-day and weeklong customers receive a more detailed route plan that accounts for inter-state travel and known charger reliability.
Our vehicles are compact to mid-range EVs suited for both urban use and longer drives. We keep the fleet small enough to maintain consistent standards — each vehicle is inspected and prepared before every rental, not batch-maintained on a weekly cycle.
Karvelin operates from a fixed address in Tawau. Rentals are arranged by phone or online enquiry, with a brief in-person handover at our office on Jalan Dunlop. We ask that customers arrive with a valid driving licence and identity document, and we walk through the rental agreement and vehicle checklist together before departure.
